Haitian Medical Relief

When I heard the news about the devastating earthquake in Haiti, my first question was, “What can we do?” In answer to that question after seeing the incredible damage, the multitudes of people dead and injured, my answer was “It’s too big and too much for us”. Perhaps you can identify with these feelings. With a phone call to a friend, Bradley Edmondson of Medical Missions Outreach, and nurse practitioner, Julie Brewer Riffe of Huntington and our church, Lewis Memorial Baptist, the proverbial ball began to roll. This is door of compassion that God has opened: Double Harvest, located eight miles south of Port au Prince, has invited us to staff their clinic (undamaged by the earthquake) for one week, January 24-31. Our team will relieve the Navy Medical Corp until a hospital staff comes to man the clinic for the month of February.
The injured are being “trucked out to the clinic” where our team of six doctors, nurses and staff will perform surgery literally around the clock. The clinic has two operating room, patients’ rooms, and other rooms to meet the needs of the Haitian people.
There will be ongoing needs presented to our ministries while we are in the country. We go with hearts open to see other opportunities to meet needs where we can.
